Sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. This smaller stomach restricts the amount of food that can be eaten, leading to reduced appetite and weight loss.

During a sleeve gastrectomy procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 75-80% of the stomach, leaving behind a smaller portion that resembles a banana or tube. The main mechanism of weight loss is reducing stomach capacity and change in hunger hormones.

The surgery is typically performed laparoscopically, using small incisions in the abdomen and a camera and specialized instruments to perform the procedure. This minimally invasive approach reduces the risk of complications and typically results in a faster recovery time compared to traditional open surgery. Risk factors will be discussed at your consultation with your doctor.
