Cholecystectomy is a common and effective procedure to treat gallbladder issues and typically leads to relief from symptoms such as abdominal pain and digestive problems
Cholecystectomy relates to the surgical removal of the gallbladder, which is a small organ located beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores bile which is fluid produced by the liver that helps digest fats in the small intestine.
When the gallbladder becomes inflamed, develops gallstones, or causes other problems, a doctor may recommend removal through surgery.
During the surgery, the gallbladder is taken out, most commonly through small incisions (laparoscopic surgery) in the abdomen, or through larger incisions if needed (open surgery).
Although complications are rare, risk factors can be discussed with your doctor during consultation.
