Psychology

Psychology plays a vital role in both the preparation for and recovery from weight loss (bariatric) surgery. Before surgery, psychological support helps patients assess their motivations, set realistic expectations, and address any underlying mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or eating disorders—factors that can significantly influence surgical outcomes and long-term success. Pre-surgery psychological evaluations ensure patients are mentally prepared for the lifestyle changes ahead, while building a strong support network enhances resilience and communication with loved ones.

After surgery, psychological support remains crucial as patients adjust to rapid changes in body image, eating habits, and daily routines. While many experience improvements in self-esteem, mood, and quality of life, others may face new challenges, including anxiety about maintaining weight loss, difficulties with body image, or the risk of transferring old coping mechanisms (like emotional eating) to new behaviours. Support groups and ongoing counselling provide a safe space to share experiences, manage expectations, and develop healthier coping strategies.
